Boston To San Francisco: 4 Days and Counting

4 Days and Counting

4 Days remain before I embark on my little journey across the northern U.S. It looks like I'm doing it solo, as I have so far been unsuccessful at convincing IJ to go with me :).

Tonight I have to go through the pile of crap that's at my dad's house and figure out what I can fit into my car and want to take with me. The rest of it, I need to pack up and put in the attic.

This is the list I have so far. I'm going to ask for any suggestions anyone has, since it will help me not forget anything. ("Wow, I made it to Cleveland... phew... I stink... I think I'll change into... aw fucking hell.")

1. Clothes (in backpack)
2. Acoustic guitar
3. Two laptops
4. iPod (w/ accessories)
5. MOTU (w/ AT3035 and stand)
6. Guitar cables, pedals, and other accessories
7. Crash pad, travel pillow, sleeping bag
8. Firebox
9. Music books
10. Mountain Bike (w/ accessories)
11. Camelbak
12. Cooler (w/ food and drinks)
13. Digital Camera
14. Toiletries (seriously, if I don't write it down, I'll forget my freaking toothbrush)

ROCK ON. Glad you're doing this... travelogues are fun. Have you mapped out wi-fi access points along the way? :)

I assume you're taking 80 the whole way? Have you ever driven across the country before? Got enough music for the trip? Make sure to blog what you listen to along the way. :)

I haven't mapped out the WiFi yet, but I know the people I'm visiting along the way have internet access. When I'm forced to stay somewhere where I don't know anyone, it will be in a major metropolitan area, and a quick drive near a college campus tends to yield plenty of available WiFi. WARBlogging :).
I'm not taking 80 the whole way... I'm doing a bit of meandering... first to Cleveland, then Chicago, then down to Boulder, and then to San Francisco. I'll spend a night in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I'm not sure exactly where I'll be on the way from Boulder to SF, yet. (you can see I've planned very well here :)).

Nifty neat-o. I was hoping you'd get a chance to get this thing up n running before you left.
Looks like most everything made it to your list. Don't forget a map :-) (I'm assuming that if you'd forget something like your toothbrush, you'd forget something like a map!)

My grandpa used to say, "when going on a trip, once you're all packed, throw out half the clothes and double your money, and you'll be about right." Of course, this isn't a vacation, but a cross-country move.

Triple the money and go nude.

(I'm kidding, but if you decide to do it, make sure your heater works.)

I also suggest watching Cannonball Run a couple of times to psyched.

Don't assume that everyone you are visiting on the way has internet access:) That's right, I don't even have a computer....Computers have scarred me so much from my previous life I cannot even dwell in the same habitat as a silicon chip...Can't sleep, computers will eat me...

There are a few pointers I will give you about moving from Boston to the west (since I have done it a few times)...1) you REALLY don't need a map because once you get on 80 it is straight across the friggin country, 2) it truely IS quicker to come via the New York State Thruway to 80, 3) When you drift off in your own fantasy somewhere halfway accross Nebraska and you THINK you see a bus carrying the Sweedish bikini team, slap yourself and down a Redbull and you will discover that it is really a hauler full of swine about to let a big runny crap all over the side of your car...Yes, that did happen to me and man did it SMELL!

Also important information for your trip from Boulder to SF (which I have also done once or twice)...1) If your car breaks down in Rock Springs, WY and you find yourself bored there is always The Astro Lounge (yes, it is a strip joint, but the women in Rock Springs are uglier than the dudes!), but take your brass knuckles and borrow a BFT or you will be out of place and in danger, and 2) Driving through Utah you really truely SHOULD hide any contraban before entering the state because the Mormons WILL find you.

Make sure the iPod is sync'ed and up to date because the midwest is a radio wasteland. Or you can take the challenge and try to channel surf whilst driving through the flatlands. You can find some interesting things you forgot about. Remember I said interesting ... not good. Then again I am a bit of a masochist about these things.
